The aim is to make the bike lie in a plane. Remove the pedals and the front wheel. Put the pedals in panniers, and strap the wheel to the frame. You will need to turn the handlebars down (by loosening at the stem) so that the bar-ends or anything similar point downwards, and you will need to turn them to the side so that they lie in the same plane as the frame. If you don’t have a front pannier rack, it is sufficient to turn them freely, but if you do have a rack you will have to loosen the handlebars and turn them against the stem. Muleteers do not insist that you deflate the tyres.

A mule can carry 2 bikes.
