Earlier thoughts of a lazy gîte holiday had slowly transformed themselves in the light of increasing knowledge into a rather strenuous tour incorporating a fair amount of roughstuff. We were a little early in the season, crossing the Bonette the day after its opening (and a week before its reclosure) and our plans were at one point disrupted by the weather. We saw no other touring cyclists, though we overheard one talking on the pavement in Nice; but there were swarms of leather-clad motorcyclists. France is not logistically difficult, but we provide a little general information about the area.
